Are you planning your traditional wedding in Ghana? Well, congratulations! In this article I share three important things to note about the Ghanaian customary marriage / traditional weddings in Ghana. Be sure to watch the more detailed video below as well to get a better understanding of marriage rites in Ghana and what to expect if you’re planning a traditional wedding in Ghana.
1. The marriage rites.
It is important to note that symbolic rituals and traditions differ from tribe to tribe in Ghana. In the Akan home [as well as literally all the other tribes], the traditional marriage rites are performed in 3 – 4 stages:
1. The Introduction.
2. The “Kɔkɔɔ Kɔ” / Knocking.
3. The Traditional Wedding [often referred to as the “engagement ceremony”].
4. The Blessing & Signing [where the marriage is legally registered and a certificate issued].
2. The “engagement ceremony”.
There are three types of marriages that are recognized under the laws of Ghana.
1. The traditional / customary marriage.
2. The Islamic marriage.
3. The marriage under the marriage ordinance.
The traditional marriage is the most common form of marriage in Ghana and can be legally registered without the need for a “white” or religious wedding. This ceremony is NOT an engagement ceremony. It is a wedding. Needless to say, if you decide to get married in a church after your traditional marriage, you’re essentially getting married twice.
3. The bride’s acceptance.
In the Akan home, asking the bride three times for her consent is symbolic. Contrary to what many think, neither the abusuapayin [head of the family] nor the bride is “dragging” the ceremony. Getting her to say “yes” three times is to prove to both families and everyone present that she fully consents to the marriage.
Of course, Fantes are known to be a little extra when it comes to this part. But how else would you know we’re in the building!? 😆
Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope.
